Shikumen House

Shanghai, China
January 2014

Argentinian artist and visual art illusionist Leandro Erlich recently re-created his famous Dalston House that was on display in London and transported the installation to Shanghai, featuring a GiantMirror by ShowTex angled at 45 degrees hovering over a façade that depicts the traditional shanghainese architectural style.

Known for creating larger-than-life optical illusions, Erlich uses a large angled mirror and a façade lying horizontally on the ground combining Chinese and Western architectural elements known as a “Shikumen House”.

The interactive work encouraged the public to sit, stand and lay down on the edifice, resulting in surrealistic images of people defying the laws of gravity - climbing or dangling from the building’s front - while also investigating the preservation of shanghai’s cultural heritage.
