This illusion is a classic stage trick that dates back to the 1860s and places an actor out of sight of the audience, in a recessed area beneath the stage. The audience sees the actor’s ghostly image reflected in a mirror foil that is suspended above the stage. Using strategic lighting, the actor appears and disappears.
