Velvets for theatre performance TALK SHOW

The Netherlands
December 2021

Scenographer Janne Sterke proves that a velvet backdrop can take you a long way. What seems to be a sober set at first, turns out to be a versatile décor.

Versatile velvet backdrop

For her theatre performance TALK SHOW, Suze Milius replicated a television studio on stage, using salmon-pink velvet drapes. The goal to evoke a sense of nostalgia is reached perfectly thanks to the retro colour of the curtains.

During the performance, the sober set turns out to be quite versatile, as the curtains open and close in unexpected ways. Being completely opaque, the drapes reveal actors and set pieces quite surprisingly, especially when combined with a Venetia roll-up system. The extra benefit? The elegance of the venetian reveal curtains only adds to the overall talk show atmosphere.

Who knew theatre drapes could turn a performance into such a spectacle?
