Light-diffusing ceiling cloth on stage

The Hague, the Netherlands
May 2025

A bright white box takes centre stage at Het Nationaal Theater, where the famous tale of Antigone is brought to life with a fresh, contemporary set design. At the heart of it all: a sleek, tensioned ceiling cloth that casts a soft, almost magical glow across the stage. Classical narrative meets modern stagecraft.

Crease-free white ceiling cloth

The scenography of Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck called for a light-diffusing ceiling fabric that stays perfectly flat when tensioned above the performance area. PolyStretch P8 CS Matt Heavy turned out to be the right fit. This thick stretch fabric does not sag, meaning its seams stay straight and edges clean — just what this geometrical set design needs.

Light-diffusing stretch fabric

The stretch fabric’s soft satin finish works in two ways: it reflects the cool tones of the play while creating an even wash of light that fills the stage. As the illuminated box moves during the performance, the diffuser fabric helps to shape the mood of each scene — without drawing attention to itself.

Touring-ready stage textiles

Touring productions come with their own set of challenges and stage textiles obviously need to hold up. The crease-resistant properties of this stretch fabric allow it to be packed and unpacked without losing that clean, tidy look. And its durability keeps the ceiling cloth tight and glowing night after night, throughout the run of the production.

Technical considerations

  • Fabric maintains tension across large spans without sagging
  • Medium-satin finish provides optimal light diffusion
  • Durable construction withstands touring conditions
