Candide

British director and scenographer Nigel Lowery recently brought his singular vision to the Flanders Opera. All theater curtains, painted backdrops, and set fabrics for his production of Leonard Bernstein’s operetta Candide were made by ShowTex. Described as an explosive mixture of Brecht and Monty Python, the performance exuded the surreal with a gigantic inflatable rubber duck, dancing toilets, and even Star Trek’s USS Enterprise. Lowery based Candide on the 1989 version but managed to create a unique interpretation through multi-dimensional set design and a thoroughly contemporary vision. Painted and custom dyed canvases for the scenery were made from 670m ShowTex Cyclo fabric. The grand scale scrim consisted of Gobelin Tulle. Hundreds of meters DekoSilk and Wool Serge made up the remaining stage draperies. ShowTex designed Fastco curtain weight rods kept all the stage canvas in place.
